From Flanders with Food

With 94 Michelin-starred restaurants and creative young chefs in town, Flanders has one of the world’s highest densities of top-class eateries, chocolatiers and beer breweries. However, Flanders also has a great offer for everyone’s budget, a delight at any table. That’s why foodies come to Flanders!

Street Food

Belgian street food is just comfort food at accessible prices. Street food chefs are often specialized in mastering just one dish, perfecting every detail until the taste is perfect.

Top 3 street foods in Flanders:

  • Belgian Waffle – usually topped with whipped cream, soft fruit or chocolate spread.

  • Belgian Fries – seasoned with a little salt, another popular way to eat is topped with mayonnaise.

  • Gentse Waterzooi – This typical Flemish meal is made with chicken, cream and finely chopped vegetables.

Chocolate

It is no doubt that Belgium is well-known for its chocolate. The Flanders region in particular is often referred to as the capital of chocolate. There is a wide variety of top chocolate brands from Godiva to Leonidas, Côte d’Or, Neuhaus, and especially two of the globe’s biggest chocolate factories, Callebaut and Puratos.

In Flanders, it’s not just about buying chocolate. It’s about a whole series of fun experiences; from visiting chocolate museums, to having chocolate walks, and tasting with chocolatiers at their workshops where visitors can design their own chocolate.

Beer

Known for their strength, sourness, complexity and bitterness, Belgian beers are brewed in surprisingly diverse ways. The historic significance of Belgian beer culture is even recognized by UNESCO, who inscribed the Belgian beer culture to their list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2016.

Belgian beer diversity comes in all colours, flavours and alcohol percentages. From high and low to spontaneous and mixed fermentation, from light to dark and from fruity to sour. There’s something for everyone.

There is also a lot of beer-related museums, activities, and events for you to enjoy a unique Belgium beer experience!
