Spend the day at leisure exploring Edinburgh on your own. Recognised as the capital of Scotland since at least the 15th century, Edinburgh is the seat of the Scottish Government. It has a medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town with gardens and neoclassical buildings. Looming over the city is Edinburgh Castle, home to Scotland’s crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, used in the coronation of Scottish rulers. Arthur’s Seat is an imposing peak in Holyrood Park with sweeping views, and Calton Hill is topped with monuments and memorials.
Today, you will have an excursion to York via 2nd class train from Edinburgh. The day starts with a private transfer from your hotel to the train station. Take train ride to York. Upon arrival in York, meet with your guide for a walking tour of the city. Start the tour at the largest medieval gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, the York Minster, just a 10-minute walk from the station. Afterwards, walk towards a group of narrow streets known as The Shambles, filled with lots of interesting local shops, cafes, and restaurants. See also the York Dungeon, which takes you back to the darkest days in the city’s history. Later on the day, take the train ride back to Edinburgh.
